Diane: I just can't have any social life right now.
Lloyd: Don't worry about it. We're just having coffee. We'll be anti-social.
Diane: Be friends?
Lloyd: Yeah. With potential.

Troy: My parents got divorced when I was five years old, and I saw my father about three times a year after that. And when he found out that he had cancer, he decided to bring me here and gives me this big pink seashell, and he says to me, "Son, the answers are inside of this." And I'm all like "What?" But then I realize that the shell is empty. There's no point to any of this. It's all just a... a random lottery of meaningless tragedy and a series of near escapes. So I take pleasure in the details. You know... a Quarter-Pounder with cheese, those are good. The sky about ten minutes before it starts to rain. The moment where your laughter become a cackle... and I... I sit back, and I smoke my Camel Straights, and I ride my own melt.

Lelaina: I was really going to be somebody by the time I was 23.
Troy: Honey, all you have to be by the time you're 23 is yourself.
Lelaina: I don't know who that is anymore.
Troy: I do. And we all love her. I love her. She breaks my heart again and again, but I love her.

Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises, Sounds, and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not. Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments Will hum about mine ears; and sometime voices That, if I then had waked after long sleep, Will make me sleep again; and then in dreaming, The clouds methought would open, and show riches Ready to drop upon me, that when I waked I cried to dream...

A Cat in an Empty Apartment Wislawa Szymborska
Dying—you wouldn’t do that to a cat. For what is a cat to do in an empty apartment? Climb up the walls? Brush up against the furniture? Nothing here seems changed, and yet something has changed. Nothing has been moved, and yet there’s more room. And in the evenings the lamp is not on.
One hears footsteps on the stairs, but...
